Former Rockstar Dev: GTA 6 on Nintendo Switch 2 'Doesn't Make Sense'

Ex-Rockstar developer Jérémy Hartvick says a Switch 2 port of GTA VI doesn't make sense on audience grounds, but allows the handheld could run it with visual compromises.

Grand Theft Auto VI is shaping up as potentially the biggest launch in the history of the games industry, provided analyst predictions hold true. Despite the enormous hype surrounding the title, it will ship as a console exclusive at launch and, in all likelihood, stay that way for a considerable time afterward. That reality has fueled questions about whether Nintendo's Switch 2 handheld could eventually receive the game — and a developer with direct experience on the project has now weighed in against the idea.

Jérémy Hartvick, a former Rockstar developer who worked on GTA VI until 2020, said in a recent interview with Kiwi Talkz that a Switch 2 port is unlikely to happen. His case rests on audience fit rather than raw horsepower. “I don't believe it even makes sense, because I'm not sure the audience for GTA 6 is so much the audience for the Switch,” he explained. “If you're a GTA fan, you would probably buy a console on which GTA will come out.”

Notably, Hartvick stopped short of calling a port technically impossible. He expects the game could be made to run on the Switch 2, though with compromises — in-game visuals among the areas that would take the hit. The obstacle, in his telling, is commercial rather than engineering-driven: a fan base devoted enough to await GTA VI for years is, in his assessment, more likely to simply purchase a console that carries the title than to expect the title to follow them onto Nintendo's hardware.

For now, GTA VI's platform footprint remains fixed: a console exclusive at launch, with no Switch 2 version announced and, per the former developer's read of the market, little business rationale for one. His remarks carry weight given his direct involvement in the project through 2020, though they represent a personal assessment rather than any statement from Rockstar on future platform plans.
