ChannelGate reports AMD is readying a 10% price increase across its lineup as TSMC wafer costs climb, hitting GPUs, CPUs, and chipsets.
AMD is preparing a broad round of price increases across its product portfolio, responding to the rising cost of securing silicon from its supply chain. According to ChannelGate, the chipmaker is working on a 10% price increase spanning its products, a move prompted by a squeeze originating in the upstream supply chain.
The root of the pressure lies with TSMC, the Taiwanese semiconductor giant that manufactures most of AMD's silicon. Because AMD depends so heavily on TSMC's foundry output, any movement in wafer pricing translates directly into AMD's cost structure. With TSMC reportedly raising the pricing of its silicon wafers, AMD has little room to absorb the increase and must raise its own product costs to maintain margins and keep the business afloat.
The scope of the hikes is unusually wide. Nearly every product AMD offers is in line for an increase, including GPUs, possibly CPUs, and even motherboard chipsets. AMD has previously implemented price hikes on CPUs and GPUs, driven by a combination of demand and high DRAM pricing. Chipsets, however, are a different story: this is one of the first instances in which AMD is raising motherboard chipset pricing, a change that will require motherboard makers to adjust their own pricing accordingly.
The magnitude of the pass-through depends on TSMC's own actions. If TSMC implements a 10% price hike across its nodes — from the 2 nm N2 process to some older mature nodes — AMD will have to pass those costs on to partners and consumers, who will ultimately bear the difference. As a fabless chip designer, AMD cannot dictate or negotiate for lower wafer rates from TSMC, leaving price increases as its principal lever for protecting profitability.
