The Claude developer's Model Hardware Standard, built with medical research institute HHMI, is designed to let AI agents operate machines such as microscopes.
Anthropic PBC has given an early look at a specification designed to let artificial intelligence agents operate physical machines, with microscopes named among the targeted equipment. The company previewed the Model Hardware Standard, or MHS, on August 27, positioning it as a bridge between AI agents and the hardware those agents are expected to run.
The standard is the result of a collaboration between Anthropic, the developer of the Claude family of AI models, and HHMI, a medical research institute. That pairing points to laboratory settings as a natural proving ground: microscopes and comparable instruments are core equipment in biomedical research, and a shared interface would give agents a defined mechanism for driving such hardware directly.
Access remains tightly limited for now: the technology has been made available to only a small circle of parties, and its preview status indicates the specification has not yet reached general release. No timeline for broader availability accompanied the announcement.
The announcement extends agent development past the software layer where much of the field has concentrated. Rather than interfacing only with applications and digital tools, agents built around MHS would address the point where code meets physical apparatus. For Anthropic, the effort signals an interest in hardware-side automation alongside its software-facing agent work; for HHMI, involvement in shaping the standard ties the research institute to how commercial AI systems control scientific instruments.
Details on broader availability, adoption terms and technical specifics have not been disclosed, leaving the specification's path from preview to established standard still to be defined.
