The selling was highly selective. Wall Street did not liquidate everything; it targeted the segment of the market most leveraged to an AI arms race presumed never to slow. Chipmakers absorbed the heaviest losses after several frontier-model executives called for more time to address safety risks. Software stocks, by contrast, recovered, and many companies outside the technology sector advanced.
That split matters more than the headline index decline. Investors are not walking away from artificial intelligence or from economic growth; they are reassessing where the next dollar of AI profit will actually appear. In that recalibration, infrastructure suppliers stand to lose some urgency, while companies still trying to monetize what they have already built could finally gain breathing room.
Technically, the Nasdaq 100 briefly fell below 29,000 before recovering, marking a third return to a psychological floor and forming what could be described as a triple-bottom structure. Yet this is not a textbook bullish reversal. The recent troughs have drifted gradually lower, and the rebounds between them have failed to print a convincing higher high, making the pattern closer to a descending triple test than a completed bottom. Each rescue has also produced a weaker rebound than the one before, leaving the floor more fragile rather than firmer.
Macro crosscurrents are tightening. Oil is trading above $100, and the Federal Reserve is approaching its most consequential decision of the year. That reframes the real question: no longer whether buyers can defend 29,000 once again, but whether enough of them will remain if the market demands a fourth defense of the level.
