A driver string, late-July test shipments to Asia, and an unconfirmed N3P rumor with Zen 6 and RDNA 5 — the paper trail behind AMD's mystery handheld codename.
The clue is literary rather than technical. AnandTech forum user SixPie has dug a previously unknown codename — Gainsborough — out of AMD's Adrenalin 26.9.2 driver, and leaker Kepler_L2 connected the dots quickly: Gainsborough is Aerith's surname in Final Fantasy VII, and Valve's Steam Deck chips have carried codenames such as Aerith and Sephiroth before. That naming lineage alone has revived talk of a Steam Deck 2 part hiding in AMD's driver tree.
There is more than wordplay to work with. Import and export records show test equipment carrying the Gainsborough name was shipped to Asia several times in late July, and the part appears in an FF6 BGA package with 1,179 contacts. Just as telling is what AMD's channel does not know: partners briefed on the Medusa APUs reportedly have no information on Gainsborough, a blind spot that would make sense for a custom part built for a single customer.
One leaker has gone much further. Moore's Law Is Dead claims Gainsborough is a semi-custom APU built on TSMC's N3P process with Zen 6 CPU cores and RDNA 5 graphics, possibly arriving in late 2027 or 2028. None of that is confirmed.
The physical evidence, though, points in two directions at once. Leakers have reportedly tied the same FF6 package to AMD's upcoming Ryzen Z3 handheld chips, which would make Gainsborough a retail part rather than a Valve exclusive. Who the customer really is remains unresolved.
For now the record consists of a driver string, a handful of late-July shipments and a package footprint — and the name remains the main clue. Whether Gainsborough lands in Valve's next handheld or AMD's own Z3 lineup, the Aerith lineage suggests a deliberate signal aimed squarely at whoever is watching AMD's driver trees.
