Meta Announces Petal, a Petabit Undersea Cable Linking the US and France

The 4,300-mile transatlantic system will carry a petabit of raw bandwidth between the United States and France — twice the speed of Meta's previous link.

Meta has taken the wraps off Petal, a new subsea cable that will stretch roughly 4,300 miles across the Atlantic to connect the United States with France. The company says the system will carry a petabit of raw bandwidth and will run at twice the speed of Meta's previous transatlantic link. The announcement underlines how quickly privately financed undersea infrastructure has moved to the center of AI-era network planning.

A petabit is a formidable figure: one million gigabits, or 1,000 terabits, of capacity on a single route. The new link doubles the throughput of the cable that came before it, a generational leap in transatlantic transmission density. Capacity on this scale is typically consumed not by consumer broadband but by enormous volumes of machine-generated traffic, from model checkpoints and training data to replication streams between US and European data center estates.

For AI compute buyers, the significance lies in who owns the pipe. Hyperscale operators have increasingly funded dedicated subsea systems outside the traditional carrier consortium model, securing bandwidth they control end to end. A petabit-scale US–France route slots neatly into that pattern: France has become a favored Atlantic landing point, and direct, high-capacity connectivity across the ocean underpins the distributed training and failover strategies that modern AI deployments demand.

The timing matters too. As training clusters grow past the point where any single region can host them, intercontinental fiber is turning into a competitive input alongside GPUs and power. Each new hyperscaler-owned route tightens the pool of premium transatlantic capacity available to rivals and carriers alike. For now, the headline figures — 4,300 miles and a full petabit — are the parameters buyers have to work with as Meta's Atlantic buildout takes shape.
