Apple's first 2nm smartphone chip pairs a Dual 16-core Neural Engine with 50% more memory bandwidth and up to 40% faster graphics — while Samsung reportedly collects $250 per display.
Apple's entry into foldable hardware with Wednesday's iPhone Duo introduction has already reset competitive expectations. IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo captured the moment: "Apple showed up years after everyone else, yet it walks in and sets the rules." From its handling of intellectual property to the small touches separating the new foldable from most rivals, Apple has defined what the entire category must now deliver. Even Samsung, which has publicly trash-talked the device, stands to benefit — Apple is allegedly paying Samsung $250 for each iPhone Duo display.
But the rules Apple has written extend beyond foldable hardware. The A20 Pro, the super-powered processor at the heart of the new phones, now sets the standard competitors must follow in chip design. The silicon carries six CPU cores, seven GPU cores and a new Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and it boasts numerous improvements over the A19 Pro — not least that it is the first 2nm chip Apple has placed inside a smartphone.
The gains are concrete. Memory bandwidth is 50% higher than last year's chip. GPU graphics performance increases by up to 40% over the A19 Pro. AI performance is expected to double. These are significant improvements, and for anyone using one of these phones they amount to a series of superlatives — experience boosts that will be noticeable in real-world use rather than abstract benchmark movement.
Notably, the A20 Pro delivers performance improvements that are noticeable even compared with the processor in last year's iPhone 17, underscoring how far this generation has moved. For an industry watching Apple re-enter an established product category and immediately define its terms, the chip carries the same message as the foldable itself: competitors now have a new standard to chase.
